Reading Skills Toolbox

Remote work improves focused work but weakens team bonding.

The old man was loquacious; he talked for hours without stopping.

The report, which was written by the team that won the prize, surprised everyone.

When did the product arrive?",你不用重读全文,直接扫数字 → 一眼看到 September 18。

She read the email, sighed, and closed the laptop. 题目问 How did she feel?

③ 信号词=路标:first / another / besides 表并列;however / instead 表转折;therefore / as a result 表因果;for example / such as 表举例。

The product is cheap. However, it breaks easily.

Level 1 · Everyday Life · 约 150–220 词

Text 1 · A Weekend in the Countryside 【

Last weekend, my friends and I went to a small village near the city. We left early on Saturday morning and took the bus for two hours. The village was quiet and green. There were trees, rivers, and small stone houses everywhere. When we arrived, we rented two bikes and rode around the hills. The weather was perfect, warm and sunny, with a soft wind. We stopped near a river and had a simple lunch: bread, cheese, and fruit. A local farmer passed by and told us about a beautiful lake not far away. We followed his advice and reached the lake in the late afternoon. The water was so clear that we could see small fish swimming under it. On Sunday, we visited a small market in the village. We bought some fresh eggs and a bag of honey. The people there were very kind, and they smiled and waved at us. Before we left, we took a group photo under an old tree. It was a short trip, but we felt relaxed and happy. We decided to go there again next month.

Yesterday evening, I went to a small restaurant near my office with two workmates. The restaurant was not big, but it was clean and warm. We sat by the window and looked at the menu. I was very hungry, so I ordered a bowl of beef noodles, a plate of vegetable salad, and a glass of orange juice. My friend Tom ordered fish and chips. The other friend, Lisa, chose tomato soup and rice. We talked about our weekend plans while we waited for the food. The noodles came first. They were hot and delicious, but a little salty. The soup arrived ten minutes later. Lisa said it was the best tomato soup she had ever tasted. The fish and chips were crispy outside and soft inside. We shared the food with each other, so we could try a little of everything. The bill came to 86 yuan in total. We thought it was a fair price for such good food. Text 3 · Looking for an Apartment 【初级 · 租房 · 约 195 词】

I am looking for a new apartment near my university. My current flat is small and noisy, so I want to move out next month. I have been searching online for two weeks, but it is not easy. My budget is about 3,000 yuan a month. I need a quiet room with a bed, a desk, and a good Internet connection. The apartment should be near a subway station, because I do not have a car. I also want a kitchen, so I can cook my own meals and save money. Last Saturday, I visited two flats. The first one was bright and cheap, but it was on a busy street. The second one was quiet and clean, but the rent was 3,500 yuan, which is over my budget. The landlord said the price could go down if I signed a one-year contract. I liked the second flat very much. On the way home, I called my parents and told them about it. They said it sounded fine, but they asked me to think carefully about the price. I will go back next week to have another look.

Text 4 · A Busy Monday 【

Monday was a really busy day for me. I woke up at 6:30, but I forgot to set my alarm the night before, so I almost missed my first class. I put on my clothes quickly, grabbed my bag, and ran to the bus stop. At school, I had three classes: English, math, and history. The English teacher asked us to read a long article aloud. I was nervous because I had not prepared the new words. After class, I ate a sandwich in ten minutes and rushed to the library to finish my homework. In the evening, I had a part-time job at a coffee shop. I worked from six to nine. When I finally got home, I was tired, but I still had to study for a math test on Tuesday. I went to bed at midnight. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I fell asleep. It was a long day, but I told myself that Tuesday would be easier.

Text 5 · A Job Interview 【

Last week, I had an interview for a marketing assistant position at a foreign company. I prepared for three days. I researched the company, practiced my answers, and even asked a friend to do a mock interview with me. The interview took place on a cold Tuesday morning. I arrived fifteen minutes early and sat in the waiting room. My hands were cold, and my heart was beating fast. Two interviewers came in, one was the HR manager, and the other was the head of the marketing team. The conversation started calmly. They asked me to introduce myself, talk about my strengths, and explain why I wanted this job. Then the HR manager surprised me with a difficult question: "Tell us about a time you made a mistake at work." For a second, my mind went blank. Then I remembered a real project where I had sent an email to the wrong person. I described the mistake honestly, explained how I fixed it, and what I had learned. The interviewers nodded and wrote something down. In the last five minutes, I asked them two questions: what a typical day looked like, and how the team measured success. They seemed happy that I had prepared. When I walked out, my shirt was wet with sweat, but I felt good. Three days later, I received an email saying that I had got the job. The lesson I learned is simple: preparation calms fear, and honesty beats a perfect answer.

Text 7 · Working Across Cultures 【

When I first started working in an international team, I thought the biggest challenge would be the language. In fact, the language was the easiest part. The real challenge was understanding unwritten rules. In my home country, people often say "maybe" or "we'll see" when they actually mean "no." This saves face and avoids open conflict. But in my German teammate's culture, "maybe" usually means "I need to think about it," and "no" is simply "no." In my first month, I agreed to a deadline with a Chinese supplier, and he said, "We will try our best." I thought that meant yes, but two weeks later the work was nowhere near done. I learned that "try our best" sometimes means "I am not sure I can." Another difference is small talk. In some cultures, before a meeting, people spend ten minutes talking about weather, weekends, or children. In my new team, meetings started exactly on time, and people jumped straight into the agenda. At first I felt rushed and even unwelcome. Later, an older colleague explained: "Here, being direct is our way of showing respect." "We respect your time, so we don't waste it." I slowly changed too. I learned to say "no" more clearly, to ask "do you mean yes or no?" when answers were vague, and to start my emails with the key point instead of a long polite opening. Cross-cultural work is not about choosing one right way. It is about learning two languages, the spoken one and the silent one.

Text 8 · My First Month Abroad 【

When I first arrived at the university in Sydney, I felt both excited and lonely. Everything was new: the buildings, the bus system, the food, even the way people smiled at strangers on the street. The first week was the hardest. I could understand most of my professors in class, but when other students chatted quickly after class, their accents and slang flew past me. I sat in the library at noon, eating a sandwich, and suddenly wanted to go home. That night, I called my mother. She did not give me advice; she just listened and said, "Give it one more month." I decided to try. I joined a study group with three local students. At first, I only spoke when asked. Then one of them, Jake, noticed my silence and said, "Your ideas are good. Don't hide them." Slowly, I started to speak more. We studied together every Tuesday, and over coffee they explained phrases like "chill" and "no worries." By the fourth week, something had changed. I understood jokes, I made small talk at the bus stop, and I even dreamed in English once. I realized that the loneliness was not because the culture was against me. It was just the price of stepping into a bigger room. Now, looking back, that difficult first month was also when I grew the most. The key was not to wait until I felt confident. The key was to speak anyway, even with mistakes.

Text 9 · The Double-Edged Sword of Screen Time 【高级 · 科技 · 约 440 词】

Few inventions have shaped modern life as thoroughly as the smartphone. Within a single device, we carry a library, a wallet, a map, a workplace, and a cinema. Yet the very convenience that made smartphones indispensable has also quietly rewritten how we think, rest, and relate to one another. Researchers have begun to ask whether the price we pay is higher than we are willing to admit. The most visible effect is on attention. A decade ago, a worker might sit through a forty-minute meeting with little temptation. Today, the average worker checks a messaging app once every six minutes, and each interruption costs nearly twenty minutes of refocusing time. Experiments suggest that even a silent phone lying face-up on a desk is enough to reduce cognitive performance, as the brain continues to spend a small but real amount of energy resisting the urge to look. Sleep is another quiet victim. Blue light from screens suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to prepare for rest. Studies link late-night scrolling not only to later bedtimes but to poorer sleep quality, which in turn weakens memory and emotional control the next day. There is also a social cost. Couples eating dinner while scrolling quietly beside each other have become so ordinary that we rarely notice them. Psychologists call it "phubbing," the act of ignoring a live conversation partner in favor of a screen. Proponents, however, argue that screens are not the enemy, habits are. A phone is a tool, and a poorly used tool blunts both the skilled worker and the careless one. Education apps connect children to courses they could never afford, and video calls let migrant parents watch their children grow up. Most experts now agree on a middle path. They suggest turning off non-essential notifications, charging phones outside the bedroom, and designating short, intentional windows for social media rather than letting it fill every empty moment. The goal is not to abandon technology, but to take back the steering wheel. A device should serve its owner, not the other way around.

Text 10 · Is Remote Work Here to Stay? 【

When offices emptied overnight in 2020, remote work was widely seen as a temporary measure. Six years later, the question is no longer whether some employees will work from home, but whether the office itself can survive in anything like its old form. The debate touches productivity, real estate, family life, and the meaning of a career. Supporters point to hard data. Commuting time, once swallowed in crowded trains, is returned to sleep, exercise, or childcare. Studies find that focused work, such as deep reading, coding, and writing, often improves at home, away from the noise of open-plan desks. Employees save on transport, lunches, and office clothing; employers save on rent. For working parents, especially mothers, flexibility has turned from a luxury into a reason to stay in the workforce at all. Yet opponents raise serious concerns too. Junior employees, they argue, learn less without the invisible lessons of the office, watching how senior colleagues negotiate and picking up casual feedback by the coffee machine. Innovation, they add, often grows from unplanned encounters, the hallway conversation that becomes a project. Companies that have called everyone back report stronger cohesion and faster onboarding. A third group argues that the real change is not location but trust. In the past, presence at a desk was treated as evidence of hard work. In a remote world, presence becomes a poor measure, and outcomes must carry the weight. This shift forces managers to be clearer about goals and more honest about results, a discipline that many organizations avoided for decades. The effects ripple outward. City centers once fed by daily commuters have reinvented themselves, while demand for homes with a spare room for an office has risen. A social arrangement built over a century is quietly rearranging itself. The most likely future is neither full-time office nor full-time home. Hybrid models, two or three days in the office, attempt to combine focused work with the relationship-building that walls and watercoolers still provide. What is disappearing is the assumption that work is a place you go to, rather than a thing you do.

Text 11 · Rethinking Standardized Testing 【

For over a century, standardized tests have been the gatekeepers of education. Millions of students sit the same exams, and universities treat their scores as a near-objective measure of ability. Recently, however, an increasing number of institutions have made these scores optional, and a deeper debate has begun: what, exactly, do these tests measure? Defenders argue that tests serve a useful function. They provide a common yardstick across schools with wildly different standards. A student from a rural school and a student from an elite private school take the same paper, so an admissions officer can compare them on at least one shared dimension. Tests also force students to master core knowledge and to perform under time pressure, skills that resemble real professional demands. Critics respond that these advantages come at a high and unfair price. Test preparation is a multi-billion-dollar industry; wealthier families can buy years of tutoring, while poorer students must rely on their own efforts. Research consistently shows that family income correlates more strongly with test scores than with later academic success, which raises an uncomfortable question: are we measuring talent, or privilege? Standardized tests also narrow the curriculum. When a school's reputation depends on scores, teachers spend years "teaching to the test," cutting subjects that are not examined, such as art, music, and debate, in favor of drilling test items. The experience of test-optional universities supports this concern. After making scores optional, these universities admitted more first-generation students and students from underrepresented backgrounds, while graduation rates barely changed. This suggests the exams were not predicting who would succeed so much as predicting who looked familiar to the admissions office. Perhaps the deepest objection is that tests capture only a narrow slice of human ability. Creativity, resilience, curiosity, collaboration, and emotional maturity are hard to measure with multiple-choice questions, yet they often predict career success better than any exam. Few educators want to abandon measurement entirely. The more constructive proposal is to broaden it: portfolios of real work, long essays, teacher narratives, and project-based assessments that show how a student thinks, not just what they recall. Standardized tests are not useless. The real danger is mistaking what is easy to measure for what is worth measuring.

Text 12 · The Plastic Paradox 【

Plastic is, by almost any measure, one of the most successful materials humans have ever invented. It is light, cheap, durable, and moldable into nearly any shape. It sterilizes surgical tools, keeps food fresh for weeks, and cushions fragile goods across continents. And yet the very properties that make plastic miraculous, its durability and persistence, are precisely the qualities that now poison the planet. This is the plastic paradox. The scale of the problem is staggering. Millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. Much of it does not disappear; it breaks into smaller pieces, known as microplastics, which have been found in deep-sea trenches, Arctic ice, drinking water, and even human bloodstreams. Recycling was supposed to solve this, but the reality has disappointed. Despite decades of public campaigns, only a small fraction of plastic waste is actually recycled. One reason is economic: virgin plastic is often cheaper than recycled plastic, because oil was cheap and recycling is labor-intensive. Another reason is practical: there are thousands of different plastic types, and sorting them cleanly is far harder than consumers imagine. Public attention often focuses on the shopper with a disposable bottle, but activists point out that a small number of large corporations produce the majority of single-use plastic. This shifts the conversation from individual guilt to industrial responsibility. Responses are now coming from several directions. Some governments have banned single-use bags, cutlery, and straws. Companies are experimenting with plant-based alternatives, though these have their own costs. Engineers are breeding enzymes that can digest certain plastics in days rather than centuries, though scaling them remains a challenge. None of these fixes alone is enough. The deeper change must be in design: producing less plastic in the first place, making products that last, and rethinking a model that treats an item as disposable after minutes of use. Plastic did not fail because it was badly made. It became a crisis because we treated a permanent material as a throwaway one.

(True / False / Not Given)

True / False / Not Given

City Parks and Public Health

City parks play an important role in urban life. A 2022 study in Greenfield found that residents living within 500 metres of a park walked an average of 40 minutes more each week than those who lived farther away. The same study reported that children with nearby green space scored higher on concentration tests at school. However, the city currently spends less than two per cent of its budget on park maintenance, and several playgrounds have been closed because of safety concerns. Local groups have demanded that the budget be increased to five per cent. The mayor has promised a review, but no final decision has been announced. Some experts suggest that even small improvements, such as better lighting, can make parks safer and encourage more evening use.
